Niacin

Niacin, also known as Vitamin B3, is a substance primarily recognized for its vital role in cellular metabolism and energy production. It is commonly supplemented because of its ability to decrease LDL cholesterol and fat levels in the body. However, recent research suggests that niacin could play a role in the treatment of cancer. Studies indicate that Niacin can modulate DNA repair processes, genetic stability and immune function, offering potential advantages in inhibiting tumor progression and enhancing the response to cancer therapies [1].

Breast Cancer: Research indicates that Niacin, via its sirtuin interactions, promoted cell death and diminished proliferation in breast cancer cell lines [7].  

Colorectal Cancer: Studies revealed Niacin's ability to enhance chemotherapy delivery to colorectal cancer metastases [8].  

Melanoma: Investigations suggest that Niacin has the ability to suppress vascular formation in melanomas and, by interfering with sirtuin proteins, inhibit the invasion of cancerous cells [2] . 

Prostate Cancer: Research has highlighted Niacin's potential to increase the sensitivity of prostate cancer cells to radiotherapy [9].

• Increased Sensitivity to Chemotherapy:  Through its interactions with different metabolic pathways, Niacin has the ability to sensitize cancer cells to specific chemotherapeutic agents, making them more responsive to treatment [6].
• Effect on Tumor Microenvironment: Niacin's impact on inflammation and metabolism might create an unfavorable tumor microenvironment for cancer cell survival.
• Targeted Therapy Enhancement: Niacin's ability to influence signaling pathways could enhance the effects of targeted therapies by sensitizing cancer cells to these treatments.
